China’s AI-native app league table is no longer a DeepSeek victory lap. QuestMobile’s mid-2026 tallies — widely cited across industry round-ups such as this DeepSeek statistics digest — put ByteDance’s Doubao first at roughly 382 million monthly active users, Alibaba’s Qwen second around 167 million, and DeepSeek third near 129–130 million as of May–June 2026. The category itself cleared about 499 million MAU, up sharply year on year.
That ranking is the SEO story. DeepSeek remains a developer darling — strong OpenRouter token share, heavy Hugging Face download volume — while its consumer app growth in China has cooled relative to Doubao’s short-video funnel and Qwen’s Alibaba ecosystem push. Q1 commentary from Chinese ad networks noted Qwen’s explosive quarter-on-quarter MAU jump versus DeepSeek’s flatter curve. Different growth engines: Doubao rides Douyin/Toutiao, Qwen rides Taobao/Alipay/Amap, DeepSeek still leans on open-source reputation and B2B API pull.
Why should a search marketer care who wins the chatbot home screen? Because these apps are becoming default answer surfaces for a huge share of Chinese-language informational demand — parallel to, not inside, Baidu’s classic ten blue links. When users ask shopping, local and how-to questions in Qwen or Doubao, the citation and grounding layer (when it exists) decides which publishers get named. DeepSeek’s sticky professional cohort may matter more for research and coding queries than for mid-funnel commercial intent.
Also worth separating app MAU from web traffic. Similarweb-style estimates put deepseek.com hundreds of millions of visits per month internationally, still a fraction of ChatGPT’s footprint, with China dominating desktop share. App league tables and global web traffic are not the same product. Treat “DeepSeek has 130 million users” as a China AI-app figure unless the source says otherwise.
For Baidu SEO and China content teams: keep tracking which answer apps your brand shows up in, not only Webmaster Tools rankings. The competitive set for visibility now includes Doubao, Qwen and DeepSeek as distribution channels — and the number-two and number-three slots are far from settled.
Retention splits the pack further. QuestMobile-linked commentary has repeatedly flagged DeepSeek’s stronger share of longer sessions versus Doubao’s mass-market frequency — fewer users, denser usage. That maps to query mix: coding, research and multi-step reasoning for DeepSeek; lifestyle and entertainment adjacency for Doubao; commerce and local services pull for Qwen inside Alibaba’s super-app graph. Your content brief should not treat “China AI chat” as one SERP. It is three overlapping answer markets with different citation incentives.
International teams also need a measurement plan that is not App Annie screenshots. Instrument brand panels for Doubao/Qwen/DeepSeek mentions, keep Baidu Tongji and Webmaster AI-traffic views for the classic engine, and separate “app answer” losses from “web ranking” losses. When Qwen’s MAU vaults on ecosystem referral, expect more product and local queries to resolve without a blue link — which is exactly when structured product data, authoritative brand entities and Chinese-language FAQ blocks earn their keep inside whatever grounding layer the app uses.
