Cốc Cốc’s Ask AI Sidebar Answers the Page You Were About to Read

On 9 April 2026 Cốc Cốc shipped Hỏi AI — Ask AI — a browser sidebar that summarises, explains, rewrites, or quizzes the page you already have open. The official blog post is plain about the defaults: ChatGPT answers unless you switch the model to Gemini under Settings, and you can untick “ask about this page” if you want a blank chat. The panel sits beside the article so nobody needs a second tab.

That is a different product from the AI Answer Box on the SERP, which Cốc Cốc describes as a beta blending OpenAI with its own model. Answer Box steals the click before the visit. Ask AI steals the read after the visit. Publishers who only watch referral reports will miss the second theft, because the visit still counts.

What the feature does to a Vietnamese content business

Cốc Cốc’s pitch is convenience: long news, jargon, paraphrase, follow-up questions, all without leaving the article. For a newsroom or an affiliate site, the incentives flip. A 2,000-word review can be reduced to five bullets in the sidebar, powered by someone else’s model, while your ads sit in the page the user is no longer scrolling. The rewrite option is a polite paraphrase button. It will be used for homework and for “unique” content farms. Pretending otherwise is how you get surprised by near-duplicates of your own explainers.

Google’s AI Overviews are already the Vietnam SEO talking point — VnExpress quoted Ahrefs’ widening CTR gap when overviews show. Ask AI is the browser-side cousin, and it only exists for people inside Cốc Cốc, which is a minority of Vietnam search but a real slice of Vietnamese-language browsing. Our explainer for non-Vietnamese brands still holds: you cannot manage this market from an English Search Console alone.

What is worth doing anyway

  • Lead with the fact. If the sidebar summarises you, the first screen should already contain the price, the date and the conclusion. Buried reveals become the model’s reveal, not yours.
  • Keep originals the model cannot invent — local prices, photos, measurements, named interviews. A paraphrase of a paraphrase is how generic sites die twice.
  • Do not block the browser out of spite without a measurement plan. Cốc Cốc is also a distribution channel with its own index, as we noted when the index question came up again.
  • Track on-page engagement, not just sessions. A visit that stops at the sidebar is not a win.

Opinion: Ask AI is Cốc Cốc admitting it would rather be the assistant around Vietnamese pages than a pure blue-link engine. That is rational for a browser company and awkward for anyone paid on time-on-page. Write so the summary still forces a scroll — tools, tables, a form, a booking step the model cannot complete. If the entire value of the URL is a paragraph, the sidebar is now the product, and you are the source it did not have to cite out loud.
