Cốc Cốc is showing AI-generated answers on a lot of Vietnamese searches, but almost entirely on informational ones. In a 100-query test we ran on 12 October 2026, an AI answer feature appeared on 43 of 100 results pages: 40 of 50 informational queries but only 3 of 50 commercial ones.
That split is the headline. If you are doing SEO in Vietnam and your traffic depends on “how”, “what” and “why” queries, Cốc Cốc’s AI box is now something you will run into regularly. If you mostly target buying queries, it barely shows up yet, at least in this sample.
How we tested
We wrote 100 Vietnamese queries, split evenly: 50 commercial (prices, comparisons, “buy” queries, tours, bank cards) and 50 informational (how-to, definitions, health, recipes, general knowledge). Each one was searched on coccoc.com on 12 October 2026 using a headless browser on one machine located outside Vietnam, logged out. All 100 results pages loaded, and we saved the raw HTML of every page.
We then went through each page and recorded whether an AI answer feature was present and what form it took. We tracked two formats:
- Instant AI answer: the generated answer is already on the page when it loads.
- Button AI answer: a “Tạo câu trả lời” (“Generate answer”) button the user has to click before an answer is produced.
Instant answers carry the label “Tính năng AI đang được thử nghiệm” (“AI feature being tested”), so Cốc Cốc still officially calls this an experiment. In the HTML we saved, the instant answer text comes from the server inside a JSON object (window.composerResponse) that JavaScript then turns into the visible box. We did not see a separate AI request fire after the page loaded.
Findings
| Metric | Informational (50) | Commercial (50) | Total (100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any AI answer feature | 40 | 3 | 43 |
| Instant AI answer | 33 | 1 | 34 |
| “Tạo câu trả lời” button (opt-in) | 7 | 2 | 9 |
| Inline citation chips in the answer | 31 | 1 | 32 |
| “+N trang web” source strip | 17 | 0 | 17 |
A few things stand out.
Most AI answers are instant, not opt-in. Of the 43 pages with an AI feature, 34 showed the answer immediately and 9 showed only the “Tạo câu trả lời” button. So when Cốc Cốc decides a query deserves AI, it usually just shows the answer.
Citations are common. 32 of the 34 instant answers had inline citation chips linking to source sites. 17 pages, all of them informational, also had a “+N trang web” strip listing more source websites under the answer. That gives publishers a route to a visible mention and a click, even if the answer itself takes the top spot.
Commercial queries are mostly left alone. Only three commercial queries triggered anything:
- “giá xe honda vision 2026” (Honda Vision 2026 price): an instant answer with citations.
- “so sánh vietcombank và techcombank mở thẻ tín dụng” (comparing Vietcombank and Techcombank credit cards): button only.
- “tour du lịch phú quốc 3 ngày 2 đêm giá” (Phú Quốc 3-day/2-night tour prices): button only.
So only one of the 50 commercial queries got an AI answer without the user asking for it. The other 47 commercial pages were standard results, made up of ads, shopping and product modules, articles, videos and related searches.
The 10 informational queries without AI show where verticals still win. Three recipe queries (“cách làm bánh flan”, “cách nấu phở bò”, “cách làm sữa chua tại nhà”) got recipe modules instead. “lịch âm hôm nay” (today’s lunar date) got a date/calendar result. “cách tính thuế thu nhập cá nhân” (how to calculate personal income tax) got Cốc Cốc’s own income tax calculator. The rest (“lãi suất tiết kiệm là gì”, “đau dạ dày nên kiêng gì”, “tiền điện được tính như thế nào”, “ai viết truyện kiều”, “cách chữa ho bằng mật ong”) just showed classic results. The pattern suggests that when Cốc Cốc has a dedicated tool or vertical for a query, that tool takes priority over a generated answer, though 10 queries is far too few to call that a rule.
What it means for SEO in Vietnam
Informational content is where the AI exposure is. With 40 of 50 informational queries showing an AI feature, publishers who live on how-to and explainer content in Vietnamese should assume many of their Cốc Cốc queries now have a generated answer above the organic results. Measure that in your own Cốc Cốc traffic instead of assuming Google’s AI Overview patterns carry over.
Aim to be a cited source. Inline citation chips showed up on 32 pages, and the source strip on 17. Clear, well-structured Vietnamese pages that answer the question directly are the obvious candidates. We did not measure which sites got cited or why, so treat that as a hypothesis worth testing on your own queries.
Commercial queries look safe, for now. 3 of 50 is low, and two of those three needed a click before anything was generated. For ecommerce, finance and travel pages, Cốc Cốc’s commercial results still look like a classic results page with ads and vertical modules. With the AI box still labelled as a test, that could change quickly.
Verticals still matter. Recipes, the lunar calendar and the tax calculator all got Cốc Cốc’s own modules instead of AI. If your niche has a native Cốc Cốc vertical, that module, not the AI box, is the thing you are competing with. We covered more of that in our piece on Cốc Cốc vertical search and Search Console.
This test was about the search results page. Cốc Cốc’s browser has its own AI layer too, which we looked at in Cốc Cốc’s Ask AI sidebar. For background on the index behind these results, see Cốc Cốc still runs a real, if national, web index and Cốc Cốc’s Q2 2026 search trends.
Caveats
- Small sample. 100 queries, 50 per group. The direction is clear, but the exact percentages are not precise estimates.
- One-off run. Everything was captured on a single day, 12 October 2026. AI features labelled as being tested can change from day to day.
- Non-Vietnam IP. We searched from one machine outside Vietnam, logged out. Users in Vietnam, logged-in users, and other devices or browsers (including the Cốc Cốc browser itself) may see different results.
- Results vary. Running the same query again, or a slightly different wording, may not trigger the same feature.
- Button answers were never generated. For the 9 “Tạo câu trả lời” pages we did not click the button, so we have not seen those answers and cannot say whether they include citations or what they say.
- Our query choice shapes the result. The commercial/informational split is our own classification, and a different set of queries could give different numbers.
