International China decks still file Weibo under “social, not search”. That was lazy in 2018 and it is wrong in 2026. Weibo has its own query box, a Discover surface, Hot Search, and an AI search layer — 智搜 (Zhiso) — that summarises the platform’s own posts, media, super-topics and video. Marketing China’s Weibo briefing says Zhiso had reached about 80 million monthly active users by late 2025. A September 2025 Tencent News write-up described the same system as a full rollout from the end of 2024, mixing natural language, multimodal posts and generated timelines (QQ News).
That is not Baidu, and it is not Shenma. Baidu is the open-web-plus-Baike default. Shenma is the UC/Alibaba mobile lane we covered in Shenma versus Baidu. Weibo search answers a different question: what are people saying, right now, in public? If your brief only asks for blue-link rankings, you will miss the place Chinese users go to check whether a brand is on fire.
What Zhiso actually retrieves
Zhiso is trained on Weibo’s own corpus: short text, repost graphs, comments, Hot Search, verified accounts and news desks. The Tencent piece is clear that the “knowledge” is accounts plus content plus scene — big Vs, blue Vs and media — not a crawl of your London corporate blog. Ask Weibo about a scandal, a handset launch or a celebrity endorsement and you get a stitched summary of the conversation. Ask it for a product specification sheet and you are in the wrong engine.
Baidu does index a lot of public Weibo URLs, which is why sloppy posts can leak into classic Chinese SERPs. That is a bonus, not the product. Treat on-platform search as the primary surface and Baidu as an occasional amplifier. Our short primers What is Weibo? and What does Weibo do? are the history lesson; the 2026 job is to show up inside Weibo’s own answer, not merely to exist as a profile.
What international marketers should change
- Write posts as answers. Named products, dates, and a point of view survive summarisation. Slogan-only creatives do not.
- Separate PR search from commerce search. Xiaohongshu and Douyin own a lot of “is this worth buying?”. Weibo still owns “what just happened?”. Marketing China’s relevance piece is right that conversion often lives elsewhere.
- Do not copy a Baidu keyword list into hashtags and call it Weibo SEO. Hashtags are conversation joins. Search terms inside the post body are what Zhiso and Weibo search can actually match.
- Monitor Hot Search defensively. You do not choose when you become the topic.
Opinion: Weibo is a public opinion index with a search box. Shenma will not tell you the mood on your brand at 4pm, and Baidu’s AI citation report will not either. If China is in the plan, someone on the team should be able to search Weibo in Chinese every week and explain what Zhiso would say about you. If the answer is “nothing, we have not posted since Chinese New Year”, that is the finding. Fix the account before you buy another Baidu audit.
