Alibaba’s loudest search story in 2025–2026 is not Shenma. It is Quark. On 13 March 2025 Alibaba said it had rebuilt Quark into a Qwen-powered AI “super assistant” for more than 200 million users in China — chatbot, deep thinking, deep research, task execution, citations included. Later product notes pushed Qwen deeper into Quark’s desktop browser as a system-level assistant (Alibaba Cloud community write-up). So is Shenma dead?
No. But if your mental model is still “Shenma = Alibaba search,” you are a product generation behind.
One group, several surfaces
Shenma began as the UCWeb–Alibaba mobile search JV in 2014. Quark incubated inside UC’s orbit from 2016 as a minimal browser, then repositioned toward intelligent search and, eventually, AI assistant positioning (Chinese product histories such as this Tencent News feature trace that arc). Official Shenma webmaster terms still list Quark, UC Browser, Shenma Search and a long tail of Alibaba properties as related “Ali business platforms” — same corporate constellation, different UX.
Practically: Shenma remains the classic mobile search brand and webmaster entry point at zhanzhang.sm.cn. Quark is the consumer AI growth engine Alibaba puts on earnings slides. UC Browser is still distribution. Qwen is the model layer — including tools that expose web search to developers, which we flagged when Qwen Model Studio’s web search tool put publishers on the hook.
What changes for SEO and GEO
AI answers inside Quark will paraphrase and cite. That is a different optimisation target from “rank a blue link on sm.cn.” Evidence hygiene — clear claims, dates, extractable passages — matters on both, but Quark’s assistant framing raises the stakes for being named and linked inside multi-step tasks (travel plans, document drafts, study help), not only for winning a ten-blue-link layout.
Do not abandon Shenma webmaster work because Quark got the keynote. Crawl and index pipelines for Alibaba’s open-web graph still need a verified site, mobile adaptation, and reachable China performance. Think of Shenma tooling as the boring pipe; Quark as the flashy tap. Ignoring the pipe because the tap is prettier is how you get zero citations and zero clicks.
Competitive read vs Baidu’s AI push
Baidu is instrumenting AI citations inside search webmaster analytics. Alibaba is instrumenting consumer habit change inside Quark. Different dashboards, same publisher anxiety: more answers, fewer visits. Your China GEO brief should track both Baidu AI panels and manual Quark answer logs — then keep Shenma organic for the mobile web residue that assistants still send out.
Opinion
Shenma is not the hero SKU anymore; Quark is. Treating Shenma as discontinued, though, confuses marketing volume with infrastructure. Alibaba still needs an indexed mobile web and a webmaster relationship. Until zhanzhang.sm.cn goes dark, international teams should keep verifying, submitting, and measuring — while rewriting the narrative from “rank on Shenma” to “earn inclusion across Alibaba’s search-and-assistant stack.”
