Tencent is reportedly preparing a consumer-facing AI search engine that puts generated answers and web results in one minimal interface — and Chinese tech press is clear that the guts are not new. IT之家’s 3 November write-up of a Huxiu report, echoed the next day by TechNode, says the product will stress authoritative-source ranking and share its underlying stack with search inside the Yuanbao app and with Tencent Cloud’s Yuanbao Search API. Tencent had not commented when Sina Tech asked.
Treat it as a sourced rumour, not a launch keynote. Even as rumour it sits in a busy week for Chinese search infrastructure: Baidu is already fighting an agent-side price war after cutting its Search AI API to a promotional ¥4.9 per 1,000 calls, and Sogou’s consumer surface is being rebuilt around Yuanbao AI Mode while Sogou Wenwen shuts on 7 November.
One stack, three doors
The interesting claim in the Huxiu account is architectural. A Tencent insider is quoted saying the planned C-end engine, Yuanbao’s in-app search and the Cloud Yuanbao Search API are the same capability productised for different doors — browser/web search, consumer chat, and developers. The search team was stood up with Yuanbao in mid-2024 and pulls technical DNA from QQ Browser and Sogou. That is Tencent admitting, politely, that SOSO, the Sogou acquisition, WeChat search and Yuanbao never opened a durable consumer search gap against Baidu — so the company is now selling the infrastructure layer while the agents are hungry.
On the B-end side the report says Yuanbao Search already offers Skill, MCP and API access, with invitation-code caps of up to 6,000 calls across October–November. Getting a key from Tencent Cloud and firing a curl request is the onboarding story. That is the same “search as a grounding commodity” market Baidu and DeepSeek are pricing aggressively into. A consumer front-end on top is how Tencent keeps a branded surface if agents start routing around traditional portals.
Authoritative sources as a product promise
“Minimal UI, stronger authoritative ranking” is doing a lot of marketing work. It is also the same promise Sogou just put on its redesigned homepage AI Mode. If the consumer engine really shares retrieval with Yuanbao Search, publishers should watch which source classes Tencent’s cloud docs and demos emphasise — news, government, encyclopaedic, vertical databases — because that is the citation diet both the API and the eventual C-end UI will lean on. There is still no public crawler policy, no webmaster centre announcement and no opt-out document attached to this rumour. Do not rebuild a Tencent SEO programme on a Huxiu exclusive.
What to watch next
Three tells will separate vapour from ship: a named consumer URL or WeChat entry point; documentation that ties the C-end ranking story to the Cloud API’s result schema; and whether Sogou’s AI Mode and the new engine stay visually distinct or quietly converge. Until then, the actionable point for international SEO is narrower. Chinese agent search supply is consolidating around a handful of indexes — Baidu, DeepSeek, Tencent/Sogou/Yuanbao — and Tencent is signalling it wants to be in that set as both an API and, again, a consumer search brand. Price and authority labelling will decide whether anyone switches.
