Chinese Advertisers Spent More Than ₽10bn on Yandex in Nine Months: 2.4x Last Year, Ecommerce Up Ninefold, Travel 7.6x

Chinese companies have more than doubled their spending on Yandex advertising this year. According to figures Yandex gave Sostav, advertisers from China spent 2.4 times as much with Yandex in January to September 2026 as in the same period last year. Yandex estimates their total at more than ₽10 billion.

That lands on the same day as Yandex’s Q3 results, which say ad budgets from all foreign companies rose 62% over nine months. Chinese spend growing 2.4x inside a foreign total growing 1.62x means one thing: China is becoming a bigger share of Yandex’s foreign ad business, and quickly.

What Yandex disclosed

  • Chinese advertisers’ spend: up 2.4x year on year for January to September, above ₽10 billion by Yandex’s estimate.
  • The average Chinese advertiser budget also rose about 2.4x.
  • 38% of Chinese advertisers started working with Yandex only in 2026.
  • Even so, 84% of the rise in average budget came from companies that were not new. Existing advertisers are scaling up.
  • By investment volume, Yandex says Chinese businesses have “for the first time begun to catch up with” the largest players in the Russian market.
  • Mobile games are still the largest category. Their spend doubled year on year (Yandex quotes January to August for this one).
  • Other categories grew faster from smaller bases: travel 7.6x, ecommerce 9x, medicine 5x.

Why this matters beyond Russia

Western coverage of Yandex has been about drones, outages and sanctions. The Chinese export economy sees it differently: Yandex is the way into Russian-speaking demand. Chinese marketplaces, travel platforms, game publishers and medical brands are buying that access, and the ninefold ecommerce figure is the one I would watch. Ecommerce advertisers rarely spend that way unless the logistics and payments behind the ads work.

The 84% figure matters more than the headline multiple. If the growth were mostly newcomers, it could be a speculative test budget that disappears in a quarter. Most of the growth comes from returning advertisers increasing spend, which suggests the campaigns are paying back.

The search angle

Paid is doing the work because organic is so hard right now. New sites and new pages have struggled to get indexed since the October data-centre attacks. We covered the log evidence this week, and Webmaster still would not take new sites or sitemaps earlier in the week. If a third of your advertisers are new to the market this year, they are probably also new to Yandex’s index. For them, Direct is the only lever that responds the same day.

That makes the organic opportunity for Chinese brands in Russia look underpriced. Many of these brands have no history in Yandex. They are translating storefronts into Russian, and Alice AI now answers a large share of Russians’ questions. The ones who invest in proper Russian-language content, Yandex Business and Maps listings, and reviews will compound. The ones who only buy clicks will keep paying for each one.

Evidence check

These are Yandex’s own figures, given to a trade publication on results day. No independent panel is behind them, and the “more than ₽10 billion” is labelled an estimate. Yandex also has an obvious reason to emphasise foreign demand after a month of bad infrastructure news. I would still take the direction seriously. It matches what Russian agencies have said all year about Chinese brands filling the space left by Western advertisers, and the category split is specific enough to be checked against what you see in the auction.
