Weibo is rebuilding its hot search landing pages, and the change rewards substance over speed. At the 2026 Weibo V Influence Conference in Beijing on 17 October, Zhou Zihui, Weibo’s senior director of hot-topic operations, said the landing page behind each 热搜 (hot search) term is getting a “structural reform”. It will be organised around the event itself, not a feed of whatever was posted most recently. Beijing Daily, Southern Metropolis Daily and Caipai carried the details over the weekend and into Monday.
What’s changing on the hot search page
- Event aggregation. Each landing page will bring together the authoritative statements, the latest developments and the people involved, so it shows how the story has unfolded.
- Viewpoint aggregation. A separate layer gathers different opinions on the event. Zhou described the aim as taking users from “seeing views, to resonating, to participating”.
- Cross-keyword, cross-content distribution. This is the one that matters most for brands and publishers. According to Southern Metropolis Daily, a post can surface on the landing page as the event develops even if it doesn’t carry the matching hashtag, and even if it was published “days or even weeks” earlier, provided it’s relevant and high quality. Zhou called it “very good news for creators”: good content that missed the first wave can still be found.
- More vertical exposure. The list itself is expanding further into technology, AI, sport and finance. Caipai reports more exposure slots for finance and tech topics. Weibo says vertical professional content reaching hot search is up 7% year on year. Hot search terms tied to authoritative statements are up 21% and those tied to opinion discussion up 10%.
Weibo also shared a number that changes how to think about timing. For more than 70% of discussion-type hot topics, traffic from the recommendation feed on the second and third day matches or overtakes traffic from hot search itself.
An AI “chief editor” for creators
Weibo is also beta-testing an AI总编 Agent (AI chief editor) alongside a hot-trend list and a “切面稀缺度分析” (angle-scarcity analysis). Together, the tools are meant to show creators which facts, expert explanations and viewpoints are still missing from a trending story. The trend list, which flags topics that are building but not yet on hot search, is already open to authors. Sina Finance’s analysis rightly notes that the agent is still in internal testing, so there’s no usage data yet. It also warns that if AI suggests the same “gap” to every creator, Weibo will have automated homogeneity, not cured it.
On the reader side, Weibo has been pushing 微博智搜 (Weibo Zhisou), its AI search entry in the bottom-left corner of post pages. Its “comment summary” condenses the discussion under a trending post. That is one more layer where AI decides which opinions a user sees first.
For scale, Weibo gave 250 million daily and 560 million monthly active users as of Q2. On the recommendation side, it says it’s cutting exposure for template-driven, trend-chasing marketing accounts. Original “real person” accounts have gained 45% in exposure over six months.
Our take
We’ve argued that Weibo search is a discovery engine, not a small Baidu, and that brands should buy the spike rather than pretend hot search is SEO. This update shifts that advice slightly. If the landing page really does pull in relevant older posts without the hashtag, then evergreen, factual, well-sourced content on Weibo gains a long tail it never had. That’s the closest Weibo has come to rewarding what search marketers would call relevance over recency.
It’s also a move against the hashtag-jacking playbook. Pages organised by event and viewpoint, a recommendation system that downranks copycat accounts, and an AI tool that hunts for missing angles all point the same way. Weibo wants information gain. Posting first with the right tag counts for less.
What to do
- Publish explainers, not just reactions. For finance, tech and AI topics in your category, a clear, sourced post can now earn landing-page exposure after the peak.
- Plan for day two and day three. With the feed matching hot search traffic for most discussion topics by then, a follow-up post with new data or an expert view may outperform the first.
- Keep official accounts authoritative. Event aggregation favours authoritative statements. If your brand is the story, your verified account’s post should be the one Weibo lifts.
- Watch Zhisou summaries of comments under posts about your brand. They are fast becoming the version of the conversation many users read.
